My teaching team is jazz.
Jazz combines spirituality, hymns, marches, ragtime, and fluidity. Jazz begins with a composition and intentionally goes off script creating sacred spaces for call and response and rhythms in our bones…and more creation. Jazz blends deep, personal stories and cultural meanings, ancestral wisdoms, and has “rules” meant to be bent and stretched. We can count on jazz artists to move into rhythms that aren’t written and are not expected, yet those movements are what makes jazz, well, jazz. Beautiful. Dynamic. Flowing. Sacred. Soulfull.
I will say it again. Our trio teaching team is jazz. We have content that builds upon foundations of national standards and guidelines. That’s our composition. Our Jazz is our ability to move with the students, meet them where they are, and teach them up into their empowerment. Jazz is our ability to be artistic, to move beyond what’s expected, and discover the golden shine of our students evolving in real time. Jazz is teaching and learning with our students.
Jazz is our weekly, team consultations and our Becoming with each other inside the ripples of our collaborations. We shape and reshape with each other and our collective ancestral intelligences. A jazzy teaching wave that consistently evolves – with nourishment, softness, and sustainability. It is fun. It is exciting. It lights me up from the inside.
